Music

At Abbey Hill, our Music Curriculum inspires Abbeyhillians to express themselves creatively, collaborate with others and build confidence through performance. It is structured around five clear strands: Listening and Evaluating, Creating Sound, Notation, Improvising and Composing, and Performing – Singing and Playing. These strands ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum and support a rich and balanced progression of musical knowledge and skills. Our curriculum is delivered through the Kapow scheme, which provides specialist-designed lessons, practical music-making, and clear progression from EYFS to Year 6. The scheme is enhanced by thematic links to topics such as Vikings, Romans, Egyptians, Rainforests, and World War Two, allowing pupils to experience music in meaningful, cross-curricular contexts.

Music reflects our values of Ambition, Pride, and Resilience, as pupils challenge themselves, celebrate their progress, and persevere through practice. Weekly singing assemblies give all children the chance to enjoy shared musical experiences and develop confidence as performers. Across all five strands, we aim to nurture musicality, develop technical ability and offer pupils opportunities to perform, compose and respond to music both in dedicated music lessons and through wider school experiences.
