At Abbey Hill, we want every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to read, write and communicate successfully. Through our English curriculum, we develop confident readers, purposeful writers and articulate communicators, equipped with the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence to express themselves and engage with the world around them.

We believe that being able to read, write and communicate well opens doors. It enables children to access the wider curriculum, share and develop their ideas, understand different perspectives and develop their own identity and voice.

From the stories, conversations, rhymes and early mark-making of EYFS to the increasingly fluent, thoughtful and sophisticated reading, writing and communication of Year 6, we carefully build children's knowledge, language and skills over time.

Alongside teaching children how to read, write and communicate effectively, we want them to discover the pleasure and possibility within English: to be curious about words, excited by books, eager to communicate and increasingly able to use language with confidence and purpose.

Our approach brings together reading, writing, phonics, spelling, vocabulary and oracy. These strands do not sit in isolation: each strengthens the others and, together, they give children the tools to learn, communicate, participate and thrive.
