History
At Abbey Hill, we believe History is important because it helps pupils develop a strong sense of identity, understand their place in the world, and see how individuals and communities have shaped society over time. By learning about people who overcame challenges, led change, and influenced the course of history, pupils are inspired to form their own opinions, ask questions, and see themselves as capable of making a difference.
History is taught through a lens-based approach, using themes such as Power and Peace, Imagination and Innovation, What a Wonderful World, and Equity and Diversity to provide clear focus and direction. Each topic is driven by a key enquiry question, encouraging pupils to think critically, explore evidence, and draw their own conclusions. Pupils engage in immersive, well-resourced experiences—from handling artefacts to visiting historical sites—which bring learning to life. These experiences are embedded in topic-based units taught alongside Geography, allowing pupils to make meaningful connections across time and place.
